What do you really, really, REALLY want?

on September 10, 2010

When I’m coaching I love to ask this question, “What do you want”?  I often get answers like “my kids to be healthy and happy” or “a better job” or “to pay off my bills”.  They are all awesome answers.  There are no right ones or wrong ones.

Then I ask the question “okay, now what do you really, really, REALLY want”?  That question brings up some thought pondering!  That digs in deeper!  When I coach over the phone I can hear their voices shift with excitement!  I hear, “go back to school and get my teaching credential” or “wow, I would write my book” or even “quit my job and move away to Fiji!”  The sky’s the limit as dreams begin to come to life again, even if it’s just for a minute in imaginations!

It’s easy to get so involved in the day to day motions in life that our REALLY WANTS get lost in the shuffle.  We play it safe and stay between the lines.  We do what we are SUPPOSED TO DO.

What if you take that inner desire and do one tiny step today?  It could be checking out a web page or making a call to a university for information; next week another tiny step.  It keeps you pointed in the direction toward your goals.  It helps you realize that “yes, it’s possible”!  That can be a powerfully freeing feeling to know that you don’t always have to play it safe, you can take little courageous steps.  It’s within your power to get to what you really, really, REALLY want and sometimes when feeling stuck, it feels amazing to know you have that capability.

  1. Lin says:

Sometimes I want a Peanut Butter Cup. But that’s NEVER what I really really REALLY want. When I take the time to think about it, I can almost almost always not eat the PBC.

  2. You inspire me! Keep writing and bearing your soul. It makes me look at my own. I really really want to be a good writer so more people will read my work and be “encouraged!” Thank you for being you!

  3. You are the real deal. Anyone who confides in you will receive the best of encouragement.
